In 1991 when the chapter was founded, there were only 12 people elected as IEEE members. Since then, the number of IEEE members in the chapter grew fast, which has reached 180. Up to now, we have had 4 IEEE Fellows who are Prof. Han-Fu Chen, Prof. Lei Guo, Prof. Daizhan Cheng, and Prof. Xiaohong Guan, about 24% people in the chapter are senior members of IEEE and 15% are student members of IEEE.

The chapter organizes 4-6 academic activities including the "IEEE Distinguished Lecturer" in each year and since 1998 at least two conferences including IEEE World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation (WCICA) and Chinese Intelligent Automation Conference (CIAC), have been co-sponsored by the chapter. The chapter offers Young Author Best Paper Prize to encourage and reward the original and prominent research from young Chinese scholars, and since 1998 the prize has been awarded in WCICA and CIAC.
